Left the castle to Hugh le Despenser by deed 19-Oct-1325 but the property was restored to the family of Dudley of Sutton in 1327. The name "Dudley" is Old English "Dode-ley" and means "burial gound." Hugh le Despenser was executed as a traitor, being hanged on a gallows 50 feet high, 24 Nov. 1326. He was beheaded, drawn and quartered, his head set on London Bridge on December 4, his four quarters placed in different places. Before his bloody end, he had served as keeper of various castles and forests.
