Tradition says that the Tussey's came originally from Sweden, when Delaware was first settled by the Swedes and Fins, (1638). The Tussey's took up land on the top of Shelpot Hill, extending from the Delaware River westward toward Shelpot creek, in Brandywine Hundred. They assisted in building the Old Swedes' Church, now at the foot of 7th Street in Wilmington (1698).
