Said to have had eleven children. The early Gilpins were from Cumberland County, England, and owned Scaleby Castle near Carlisle. This was in possession of the family in a female line up to recent times. In spite of their previous allegiance to Cromwell and their army records, both the Gilpin and West families are said to have joined the Society of Friends.
